Thank you for enquiring about membership at Newcastle Theatre Company Inc (NTC). Our theatre company has been around since 1957. We are an amateur group run by volunteers, apart from our two part-time employees (Cheryl Sovechles and Robyn Greenwell) who share Theatre Manager duties (as well as other voluntary work). The theatre’s office is open Monday – Friday 3-6 p.m. Although amateur we pride ourselves on approaching our shows with as much professionalism as we can muster.

As stated, our company is run by volunteers which make up our Committee and Executive – these volunteers nominate for the positions they hold, and a vote is held at our Annual General Meeting (AGM). Some of our outstanding volunteers have been rewarded with Life Membership. We also have a patron Carl Caulfield (click here) and our emeritus patron is Aarne Neeme. Their experiences are invaluable and are shared with members via workshops or sometimes other opportunities arise.

We welcome new members 18 or older, regardless of experience. Some members prefer backstage roles, others on stage, some are happy to go on Committee, others wait until there are working bees or other call-outs for members’ help. Occasionally, we have roles for children, but special circumstances apply which are explained when necessary. It isn’t hard to get involved once you’re a member, a regular email advises you about our workshops, auditions, working bees and play readings. How much you get involved is up to you.

All our plays have open auditions (although Directors may sometimes pre-cast important roles) and members are alerted by email of these auditions. We also have a members’ group page on Facebook for our financial members which also announces auditions. Every show is also hoping to get a creative crew as well as volunteers to help build sets or work on the canteen or to usher.

Soon we hope to introduce a members’ only page on this website later this year, which will allow members to access vital information as well as join in discussions without having to be on Facebook too. Moreover, we are looking to increase workshops to develop members’ skills throughout each year.
